Project summary
The project is to renew the consents for the existing Kuratau Hydro-Electric Power scheme approximately 36km south-west of Taupō and approximately 2.5km north-west of Kuratau Village. The Scheme has an installed generation capacity of 6MW and generates on average 28GWh per year and currently generates renewable electricity by:
- damming of the Kuratau River with an earth dam to form Lake Kuratau 
- the discharge of water from the Kuratau spillway to the Kuratau River 
- the take and use of water and discharge of contaminants from the canal to land 
- the discharge of water from the Kuratau power station turbines to the Kuratau River by means of a tailrace.

In the Kuratau River catchment approximately 36km southwest of Taupō and approximately 2.5km north-west of Kuratau Village.
Project referral
The Minister for Infrastructure referred the project to the Fast-track on 21 October 2025. The application was lodged on 3 June 2025.
