The Minister for Infrastructure referred the project to the Fast-track on 15 June 2026. The application was lodged on 7 April 2026.
Key components of the project include demolition of the existing Student Union complex and construction of a new building that will accommodate:
a range of high-quality student study, teaching and learning; social and event spaces; and food, beverage and retail
a new library; and
a visitor hub containing welcoming spaces and an exhibition space
The project includes landscaping, and a large-scale public plaza which will serve as a gathering and event space, as well as supporting infrastructure and associated works including earthworks and servicing.
The project is located within a recorded archaeological site, being the Albert Barracks Wall causing an archaeological authority to be required for works in and around this area.
